We’re always on the look out for new, interesting places to eat at and after reading a review on the Field Kitchen, couldn’t wait to try it on a recent trip to South Devon. Riverford is known for delivering fresh, seasonal fruit and vegetables to the country through its box schemes.
We started the visit with a guided walk around the farm, learning more about its organic principles and methods of farming, picked fresh tomatoes from the polytunnels to take home, and even had a tractor ride (the husband was particularly thrilled!). So with our appetites piqued, we sat down at one of the long tressle tables amongst the other diners and tucked into Sunday lunch. The set menu changes through out the year according to the seasonal produce, but we got to enjoy roast lamb, roasted beetroot and carrots, fennel gratin, a seasonal salad, and a range of puddings that were too difficult to choose from – chocolate sponge, berry pavlova, sticky toffee pudding and apple tart. All cooked to perfection by Jane Baxter who has previously worked in the River Café in London. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly – you all sit together so will end up chatting with your immediate neighbours on the same table. The food is brought out in large serving bowls and left on the table to be shared around – everyone starts out being very polite, but are soon scraping the bowls for seconds and thirds. My friend had a very nice vegetarian flan as an alternative, and everything was washed down with organic beer or wine. It’s a perfect place to take the kids to learn more about what they eat, or if you’re an amateur gardener so you can pick the Riverford staff on organic farming methods, or if you just love good food. Pop in on your way to Dartmouth and South Devon and try it – you’ll be longing to go back. Booking essential. www.riverford.co.uk |
