January 23 2008 An investigation into the health benefits of fruit smoothies and pre-prepared packaged fruit. When trying to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg a day, it’s so much easier to pick up a pre-prepared fruit salad than buy the raw ingredients and make it ourselves. Some critics argue that nutritional value is lost in the preparation process, and because much of the fruit is grown and prepared abroad and uses extra packaging it is environmentally unfriendly. January 15 2008 The Soil Association has banned man-made nanomaterials from its certified cosmetics, food and clothing products. As scientists are still concerned what impact this molecular technology has on the environment and human health, the association wants the government to regulate nanotechnology, and hopes its organic labeling will benefit worried consumers. January 12 2008 The Eden Project in Cornwall has made the first coffee using UK grown beans. Grown in its huge greenhouses, it was served in Fifteen restaurant in Watergate Bay which tries to source most of its ingredients locally. Although it won’t be sold commercially, the experiment was a huge success and joined a number of other products normally grown abroad that are now produced in the South West. October 15 2007 In a recent article in The Guardian, Rebecca Smithers discusses the affordability of buying environmentally friendly shopping. According to the research by the National Consumer Council (NCC), "green shopping" is now more affordable, and although there have been some improvements in the supermarkets' stock, further work needs to be done.
