July 7 2008 A government report states that 4m tonnes of food are wasted each year at a cost of £420 per household. Gordon Brown has called for greater awareness on the first day of the G8 summit in Japan, where rising food and energy prices will dominate debate between world leaders. The prime minister said: ""If we are to get food prices down, we must also do more to deal with unnecessary demand - such as all of us doing more to cut food waste which is costing the average household in Britain around £8 per week." July 4 2008 Pollack was once seen as only suitable for cats, but is now a favourite of celebrity chefs due to its green credentials. Salmon, cod and Haddock sales dropped by 10% last year, whilst Pollack went up more than 150%. Seafish, the government's Sea Fish Industry Authority, said the increase may be driven by consumers making choices arising out of concern for the environment and a demand for locally sourced food: "Choosing alternative species helps to ease the pressure on stocks of more traditional fish." June 29 2008 Gardeners have been warned not to eat home-grown vegetables contaminated by a powerful new herbicide - the affected gardens have been contaminated by manure from farms where the hormone-based herbicide aminopyralid has been sprayed on fields almost 12 months ago. Dow AgroSciences who manufactures the herbicide said "the trace levels of aminopyralid that are likely to be in these crops are of such low levels that they are unlikely to cause a problem to human health." However, the company's website says "'As a general rule, we suggest damaged produce (however this is caused) should not be consumed.' Those who have already used contaminated manure are advised not to replant on the affected soil for at least a year. Click here to read the full article
June 28 2008 The campaign to improve the welfare of chickens sold in Tesco stores, led by celebrity chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, hijacked the company's annual meeting yesterday. 8.9% of shareholders supported his motion calling on Tesco to improve the standards of care. Tesco's chairman, David Reid, said the company would be willing to take part in broader government-led discussions on poultry welfare. Click here to read the full article
June 19 2008 The global food crisis has persuaded Gordon Brown that the time is right to reconsider the role of GM crops in the UK. They have been grown in the US for years but there is only one trial in Britain, of GM potatoes in Cambridgeshire. Environmentalists reacted angrily to these suggestions - Friends of the Earth said "Growing GM crops also threatens wildlife and the production of GM-free foods. What's more, some GM crops could allow more pesticides to be used." Click here to read the full article
June 18 2008 The rise in food prices has pushed inflation up to its highest in nearly 18 years. Meat and bread were up 9%, fish and veg up by 7%, and milk, cheese and eggs up by almost 20%. The cost of living is now the highest since 1990 with half of the increase because of food prices leading to big increases in the number of shoppers visiting discount chains such as Lidl, Aldi and Netto.
