I’ve just read a brilliant book called “In defence of food” by Michael Pollan. He’s not promoting some new diet fad, but instead saying if we generally eat less and eat more vegetables we can live a much healthier lifestyle. I know, he’s completely mad! His top tips are:
If you have to shop in a supermarket, avoid the centre aisles as this is where the most processed food is sold. Fresh food, such as fruit, vegetables, dairy and meat tend the line the walls.
Where possible shop at farmers’ markets or eat from your own garden – you’ll be eating fresh, whole foods picked at the peak of taste and nutritional value.
Have a glass of wine with dinner (horray!!). Its been scientifically proven that those of us who drink moderately and regularly are less at risk to heart disease than tea-totallers.
Pay more for your food. Better food usually costs more because it has been grown with more care and less intensively.
Eat proper meals at a dinner table rather than snacks which tend to be high in calories and highly processed.
When reading the ingredients on food packets - avoid foods that contain names that are unfamiliar or unpronounceable.
Cook. To know exactly what you are eating cook your meals from scratch using fresh ingredients from local shops or your own garden.
