An Introduction PDF Print E-mail
Green Food GuideLet me introduce the people behind Green Food… Firstly we should make it clear we don’t live in a teepee in the middle of a field, eating nuts and berries whilst wearing sandals (vegetarian of course) and planning our next demonstration at the local supermarket. Both my husband and I have worked in websites, marketing and retail for far too many years and now live in a little house by the sea. We’ve always loved nature, taking long walks, camping and finding new places to eat and drink. But like the rest of the world, a few years ago we began to worry about the environment and our planet. Al Gores’ amazing film “An Inconvenient Truth” really hit home, so we set about being more green. Luckily where we live the council’s recycling programme is fantastic, so each week they pick up all our cardboard, paper, glass, metal and plastic. A composter from Wiggly Wigglers helps reduce the waste even further, and we use the local freecycle network to find homes for any unwanted bits and bobs. Appliances are switched off, energy efficient lightbulbs used, and the house is insulated again heat loss. We plant trees, use public transport, walk or cycle where we can, buy organic and local food, and never use shop’s plastic bags (well, hardly ever). So we try to be green, but will it make a difference in the big picture? Can we do more?
So this is it… the Green Food Guide. We’re not environmental experts, but we’ve used the skills we have – design, marketing, promoting – to help more people lead greener lives. It’s a free forum for environmentally aware businesses to promote themselves, for consumers to find ethical food suppliers who worry about the same things they do. It will hopefully inform, educate, inspire and you never know… it might make a bit more of a difference in the fight against climate change, and along the way, we’ll all get to enjoy the best tasting food from around the UK.

We love Organic PDF Print E-mail
While the press and scientists still squabble over the pros and cons of organic food, food miles, and what to do about climate change, it’s understandable consumers are confused about what they can do. But other than the eco advantages to organic, there are plenty of reasons why we should buy more natural food.

How to eat better and save the world PDF Print E-mail
I’ve just read a brilliant book called “In defence of food” by Michael Pollan. He’s not promoting some new diet fad, but instead saying if we generally eat less and eat more vegetables we can live a much healthier lifestyle. I know, he’s completely mad!

Wahaca, Covent Garden, London PDF Print E-mail
wahacaOn a trip recently to London we stumbled upon this lively canteen-style restaurant behind Covent Garden. On a drizzly Sunday night when other bars seemed almost deserted we were drawn to the bright colours, packed tables and rowdy atmosphere. The concept is genius - like the noodle chain "Wagamamas" the menu is displayed on paper place mats, diners sit along trestle tables and the chefs prepare food in the open kitchen.  The menu is inspired by Mexican street food, with a variety of corn tortillas and lots of fresh ingredients - Tacos (half-rolled with delicious toppings and salsa), Tostadas (gently-fried and topped with salads and fresh ingredients), Taquitos (filled with shredded meat or vegetables rolled into a flute), Quesadillas (ingredients with cheese,  folded and griddled), and Burritos (toasted hot and wrapped). Dig in to freshly made guacamole, slow-cooked free-range pork and sustainable fish marinated in chillies, served with ice-cold Mexican beer and tequila. Like spanish tapas food, you can choose a selection of dishes to share, so its better to be adventurous and try abit of everything. Aswell as great food at very good prices, Wahacas also tries to source alot of the ingredients from UK suppliers and producers, and serves seasonal specials - Habanero chilli from Devon, free range pork and chicken from Hampshire, fish from sustainable stocks, seasonal vegetables from New Covent Garden market and fruit juices from Kent. Its the perfect venue for a quick lunch, or fun night out with friends.
